Onalaska Safety Day and Bike Rodeo Saturday, April 10th 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Onalaska City Hall, 415 Main St

This is a free event for the whole family! There will be approximately 20 different booths, stations, activities for your family to enjoy including safety displays, nutritional snacks, physical activities, and the bike course. Don't forget to bring your bike for a free maintenance check and the rodeo course. Register for the booths and you'll be eligible to win the GRAND PRIZE, a free family pool pass to the Onalaska Aquatic Center!

Just WOW! What an amazing turn out at the Bike Summit! There must have been 150 people or more of all ages and sizes!

The speakers were fabulous.

City planner, Larry Kirch, invited bicyclists to help support biking infrastructure planned to enhance bicycling and commuting in our community.

Bike Ped committee member and transportation planner, Jackie Eastwood, talked about the comprehensive plan that is nearing completion. Input from bicyclists is welcomed.

Tim Keneipp talked about the new Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition and its goals to improve bicycling, safety and infrastructure in our community and inviting all to join.

A representative of Human Powered Trails talked about the work they've done and will do and how this organization cooperates with others to enhance the network of off road trails in our area that can be the foundation for increasing economic growth.

Hansi Johnson announced that La Crosse is going to become an IMBA hub with a network of world class trails all over the region.

Kevin Hardman, BFW president, had a great and focused presentation about what CAN happen when bicyclists band together and stand up for what is right. His graphs showing how little money is invested in bicycling in Wisconsin were amazing. Please SIGN UP FOR THE STATE BIKE SUMMIT, APRIL 21 & 22! John Burke's presentation was super fantastic. Bicycles are a simple solution to complex problems. Period. And he showed it. He pointed out that we actually now have a Transportation Secretary in Ray LaHood who recognizes the value of bicycles and bicycling. Also memorable from his presentation was the outright horrific year by year graph of how obese America has become in the past 20 years. I can't find a link to his graphs, but this site tells the story.

Western Wisconsin Bike Summit

On TUESDAY, MARCH 23, 2010 at 5 p.m. the first ever Western Wisconsin Bicycle Summit will be held at the RADISSON CENTER, 200 HARBORVIEW PLAZA, LA CROSSE.

This event will bring together bicyclists from the region - recreational, racers, off road and commuters - plus businesses and government officials to learn how support for bicycling and bicycle infrastructure can benefit the Coulee Region.

The summit it sponsored by local individuals and groups and the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin to bring together the large regional bicycling community plus government, business and planning entities to learn how support for bicycling can help bring in more tourist dollars, expand job opportunities, improve the health of our citizens and alleviate traffic problems.

Our keynote speaker will be John Burke, CEO of Trek Bicycles, founded and based in Wisconsin, who is a global leader in the bicycling industry. He has spoken around the world on the bicycle as a "simple solution to complex problems."

From 5 to 6:30 p.m., at an open networking time with cash bar, participants are encouraged to learn about the many faces of bicycling in the La Crosse area, bicycle related businesses, planning and plans for bicycle infrastructure and opportunities for involvement at the local, regional, state and national level.

At 6:30, participants will hear from Kevin Hardman, Executive Director of the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin; and, Hansi Johnson, Midwest Regional Director, of the International Mountain Bicycling Association.

At about 7 p.m., Mr. Burke will give the keynote presentation. A speaker's reception will be held after his talk for anyone wishing to learn more about his company and his advocacy.

Bicycling is an increasingly important part of our state's and region's future. A recent study by the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, a program of the University of Wisconsin, concluded that recreational cycling in Wisconsin generates $1.5 Billion in economic activity annually (more than that generated by deer hunting.) Bikers from other states generate about $535 million a year.

With state and local bicycling infrastructure in our area and an active bicycling community, with more people concerned about their health and fitness and with more communities seeking ways to generate new economic activity, bicycling is poised to be one of the major solutions to the economic, transportation and health challenges we face today.

Bike CO-OP

I have these dreams of starting a bike co-op. You buy in and get some of the following cool benefits: one bike tune up per year, instructions and a fully equipped workshop where you can do your own work, roadside assistance for your bicycling adventures, educational workshops (for hacking your bike, building stuff for your bike, etc.), bikie movie nights, bike maps and gear at low low prices, bike fed membership (of course), guided trips for members and non-members (how to raise funds), and ... well, these are just some ideas.

Ok, starting a bike co-op is on my list of things to do! Yeah, not an original idea!
